Kurfürstendamm in Berlin

Kurfürstendamm in Berlin

Every major metropolis has at least one well-known shopping street. The most popular boulevard in Berlin is probably

the Kurfürstendamm, also commonly referred to by Berliners as Ku'Damm. It is the beating heart of the City-West and the counterpart to Friedrichstrasse in the east. Originally it was created around 1542 as a causeway from the Berlin City Palace to the hunting lodge in Grunewald, and served as a bridle path for the Elector Joachim I.

Otto von Bismarck then, for first time, expressed the idea to expand the Kurfürstendamm to a boulevard. This idea was picked up in 1882 and laid the foundation for what the Ku'Damm stands for today: a 3.5-kilometer-long luxury boulevard with many fine shops, ranging from Gucci over Prada to Armani. If you want to buy new fashion this is the place to go, there is a huge offer for very kinds of needs and preferences.

But on the Ku'Damm you not only have shops and hotels, but also special sights and interesting places, such as the Berlin Schaubühne (a popular theater), the Memorial Church, the Europa-Center, the KaDeWe, the Berlin Zoo, and not to forget, the wonderful Astor Lounge, the most comfortable cinema in Berlin. The side streets of the Ku'damm also have a lot of interesting shops and restaurants to offer. It will basically never get boring on this "street.” A visit to the Ku'damm definitely belongs on your to-do list. Shopping here can be very expensive, but taking a look at it alone is worth it.
