The radio tower lays in the district of Charlottenburg. Originally, it should become a broadcasting tower, the restaurant and viewpoint were added later.
Short History Berlin Funkturm
The construction was started in 1924 during the first big radio and television show in Berlin. Construction was finished 2 years later and on 3rd September 1926 it was put in operation.
H. Straumer made the plans for the tower that resembles the Eiffel tower in Paris. The Funkturm was used as a symbol for the new constructed exhibition site in Charlottenburg.
What many do not know: The Funkturm used as an antenna mast for the in 1923 founded German radio. In 1932, the antenna broadcasted the worldwide first UKW radio sender. Already in 1936, the first regular TV programs were broadcasted. Furthermore the tower has porcelain insulators.
The tower was used for radio and TV transmission until 1963 when a new radio and TV tower was build. The total height of the tower Is 150 m, the viewpoint is at 126 m and the restaurant at 55 m.
When you arrive at the viewpoint, you are rewarded with a fantastic view above Berlin and the restaurant is worth a visit every time.
Berliners call the Funkturm fondly ‘Langer Lulatsch’ (Beanpole).
