The Oberbaumbrücke is one of Berlin’s nearly 1000 bridges and brigde construction.
Since 1896, it connects Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg. Until the beginning of the 90ies, it decayed during the German separation because the border between East- and West- Berlin went right through the bridge. Then it was fully renovated. In sight of the bridge in the middle of the river Spree lays the art installation ‘Molecule Men’ by the American artist Jonathan Borofsky. The ‘Molecule Men’ is an enormous (It is actually as high as a house!) artwork that symbolizes the encounter of the two districts on that place.
Did you know that Berlin has more bridges than Venice? The Oberbaumbrücke is one of the most beautiful bridges in Berlin, - it is simply an artwork. Cars use it besides Berlin’s oldest subway line, you can walk across the bridge as well! At the time, the German architect Otto Stahn made the bridge appear medieval like and created an artwork that resembles a castle in Mark Brandenburg.
During summer, the Oberbaumbrücke is a popular meeting place especially during the nights. You can find several beach bars here as well, directly at the riverside of the Spree. Our special tip: The ‘Club der Visionäre’ (Club of Visionaries)
