The German Historical Museum Berlin

The German Historical Museum Berlin

The German Historical Museum shows the entire history of Germany in pictures and testimonies and with its constantly changing exhibitions is a must for all

those who are interested in and want to immerse themselves in the history of Germany. With over 8,000 exhibits, you will experience exciting, eventful 2,000-year-old German history in a European context. The museum's task is to present German history in an international context. Multi-perspective perceptions aim to promote understanding of the views of others in order to enable a high degree of reflection on history and culture in an era of internationalisation of everyday life and globalisation of work and economy. Remarkable are the two buildings: On the one hand the preserved baroque building of Berlin, the Zeughaus, and the new building of I.M.Pei, erected at the back. Since 2006 you can see the permanent exhibition "German History in Pictures and Testimonies" in the Zeughaus.

The German Historical Museum Berlin

Brief History of the German Historical Museum

The museum was founded on 28 October 1987 on the occasion of the 750th anniversary of Berlin's founding and was supported by Chancellor Helmut Kohl, who in his speech on the state of the nation to the German Bundestag on 27 February 1985 described the founding of a German Historical Museum in Berlin as a national priority of European importance. Originally the museum was to be located near the Reichstag building on the Spreebogen, the government complex on the Spreebogen. In 1990, however, the Federal Government handed over the collection and the premises of the former Museum of German History to the DHM; in 1695, the Zeughaus - the oldest building on Unter den Linden - became the seat of the German Historical Museum. The first exhibitions were shown in September 1991 in the Zeughaus, the permanent exhibition German History in Pictures and Works of Art was opened by German Chancellor Angela Merkel on 2 June 2006 in the Zeughaus.
