The GDR Museum is located in the centre of Berlin in the Berlin-Mitte district. It is located in the former government district of East Germany, directly on the Spree, opposite Berlin Cathedral and Museum Island. The GDR museum project was initiated by the ethnologist Peter Kenzelmann from Freiburg. According to media reports, he had searched for a museum about the GDR on a trip to Berlin, but had found none. He therefore decided to close the gap and opened the museum on 15 July 2006 with Gordon Baron of Godin. Most of the exhibits from everyday life come from private households that have bequeathed their "companions" to the museum. On November 7, 2017, the museum welcomed its five millionth visitor.
