The Bauhaus Archive/Museum of Design in Berlin researches and presents the history and effects of the Bauhaus (1919-1933),
the most important school of architecture, design and art in the 20th century.
It is impressive that the Bauhaus Archive has the world's largest collection on the history and impact of the Bauhaus. Classics are the "Bauhaus wallpaper" or the tubular steel armchair by Marcel Breuer. The collection includes teaching results, workshop work, architectural plans and models, photographs, documents and a library.
The archive houses an important collection of paintings, drawings and sculptures by Bauhaus masters and students, including works by Feininger, Itten, Klee, Kandinsky, Moholy-Nagy and Schlemmer.

The Bauhaus Archive is located in the city district of Charlottenburg, right next to the Technical University of Berlin, and is only a few minutes' walk from the famous Kurfürstendamm shopping mile and the Zoological Garden. You will also find other Berlin sights such as the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, the Europa Center and the Kaufhaus des Westens. As an insider tip, we also recommend that you make a detour to the Monkey Bar; a rooftop bar with a view of the monkey enclosure!

The Bauhaus Archive was founded in Darmstadt in 1960. Walter Gropius and other members of the Bauhaus movement supported it. The collection grew so quickly that a museum of its own appeared attractive and Gropius was commissioned to design it. In 1964 he drew up plans for a new museum in Darmstadt, on Rosenhöhe, which was prevented by local politics.
However, the Berlin Senate was prepared to provide space and money for the project. In 1971, the Bauhaus Archive moved to a temporary accommodation in Berlin. Changes to the location concepts at the Landwehrkanal, political decisions and financial restrictions delayed the development. The foundation stone was laid in 1976 and the building was completed in 1979.
