The Gemäldegalerie (picture gallery) has one of the world's most important collections of European painting from the 13th to the 18th century.
Since 1998 it has been presenting its collections chronologically by epoch, art landscape and school in 53 exhibition rooms on 7,000 square metres of exhibition space at the Kulturforum Potsdamer Platz.
Of the approximately 3,000 paintings in the entire collection - including works by van Eyck, Bruegel, Giotto, Botticelli, Titian, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Rubens, Watteau and Gainsborough - some 1,100 can be seen in the main gallery and around 350 in the study gallery.
The Gemäldegalerie is proud of its scientific methodology in collecting and exhibiting art. Each room can be recorded as a single statement about one to five artists in a given period or style. The German collection is the most beautiful and extensive in the world, competing only between Vienna and Munich, and the Old Dutch and Italian collections are also exceptionally extensive.

The Gemäldegalerie is located in the Kulturforum Berlin, between the Landwehrkanal and Potsdamer Platz in the Tiergarten district of the Mitte district. Further museums in the Kulturforum are the New National Gallery, the Kunstgewerbemuseum, the Kupferstichkabenett and the Musikinstrumenten-Museum. A few steps further, you will find the impressive Sony Center.

In contrast to most large national European collections, the Gemäldegalerie's collection did not originate from the former dynastic royal collection, but from a purchase process by the Prussian government from 1815 onwards. From the outset, the museum was to reflect the entire spectrum of European art and set a different accent than the older royal collections.
The collection was first opened to the public in 1830 after the completion of the Royal Museum, now the Altes Museum (Old Museum). In 1904 the Picture Gallery moved to the newly built Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum, today the Bode-Museum, where the collection was further expanded. The collection was severely damaged during the Second World War, then divided between West and East and reunited in 1990. The present building of the Kulturforum was completed in 1998 and displays around 1,250 paintings.
