The most famous yards in Berlin are the Hackesche yards at Hackescher market. They have been listed under monumental protection since 1972.
A visit is for all art lovers a must. It´s a total of 8 interconnected yards in between Rosenthaler street and Sophienstreet.
The yards were reconstructed in 1993, the reconstruction costed 40 million euros.

Brief history Hackesche Höfe
In the 17th century the site was located outside the city and was mainly used to store hay and straw in barns, which was forbidden to store in the city center because of fire danger.
That´s why a nickname of this area is also “barn hood”, in german “Scheunenviertel”.
It was in 1731 that Frederick William I. expanded the city of Berlin and since then the Hackescher Markt was part of the city of Berlin and the waste land was used to construct buildings.
Many of the back yards close at night to ensure the night rest of the residents. While the front yards stay open at night and offer interesting shops, restaurants, cafés, a vaudeville, clubs and bars, and a museum. Worthwhile is also the search for the cinema Central.
The yard is a single urban artwork.
