Brief history Potsdamer Platz

After the Second World War, the area was almost destroyed, and divided by the Berlin Wall (with video) in 1961. As a city fallow between East and West, Potsdamer Platz spent more than 40 years in deep sleep. If you look down there today, a metal strip embedded in the concrete reminds you of the pathway of the Wall. After reunification, the opportunity arose to rebuild the former center of the metropolis. The Potsdamer Platz was actually designed as a whole new district by architects. The concept of the "European city" deliberately decided against dense high-rise buildings. In just five years, Europe's largest construction site has created a new, urban center out of nowhere, which Berliners today call the "New Center of Berlin.”

Activities on Potsdamer Platz

Today it is a hub for numerous entertainment venues. The "district center" is the Marlene-Dietrich-Platz, dominated by the double structure of the casino and the musical theater with its large roof. The Potsdamer Platz in Berlin is adjoined by the octagonal Leipziger Platz with the elegant Mall of Berlin, the Dalí Museum and the German Spy Museum. On the southern side of Potsdamer Platz lies the Kulturforum. Here you will find, among others, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Gemäldegalerie and the Musikinstrumenten Museum. The Museum of Film and Television at the Sony Center (with video) offers an exciting tour of German film and television history. By the way, you can admire the current movie stars in one of the four nearby cinemas, the Cinemaxx, Cinestar, the IMAX and the Arthouse-Kino Arsenal at Potsdamer Platz. The Sony Center with its imposing forum, is now heavily frequented by visitors and is one of the main shopping addresses in the city, together with the Potsdamer Platz Arcades. If you stroll across the square you can hardly imagine that for 40 years, there was absolutely nothing. We suggest you take a ride on the fastest elevator in Europe to the panoramic platform and enjoy the great view!

The Potsdamer Platz is one of Berlin's top 10 attractions.
